1992, March–April

The Democratic Party won the general elections and secured an overall majority in the People's Assembly (March 22 and 29). On April 3, Ramiz Alia resigned as president and Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party, became the new president. On April 19, a Democratic Party–dominated government was sworn in under Prime Minister Alexander Meksi, definitively ending the communist era.	1

1993, March 31

The People's Assembly approved legislation to protect human rights and freedoms, as part of a future new constitution.	2

July 30

Fatos Nano, leader of the Socialist Party and prime minister in 1991, was arrested in Tirana and charged with mishandling $8 million.	3
