The Czechoslovak and Hungarian governments agreed that ethnic Slovaks from Hungary and ethnic Hungarians from Czechoslovakia who volunteered to return to their native countries would be exchanged in equal numbers.
Elections to the National Assembly gave the Communists 2.7 million of the total 7.1 million votes and 114 out of 300 seats. As a result, Communist leader Klement Gottwald formed a new coalition cabinet.
