President Pieck announced that East Germany would be forced to rearm if West Germany became integrated with Western Europe. On May 7 the government announced plans to form an army to defend the Soviet zone “against aggression.”
Increased pressure on West Berlin coincided with the signing of the Bonn agreement, as the East German government ordered new restrictions on communications between East and West Germany.
