1971–87

The Labour Party, under Dominic Mintoff and then Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici, dominated Maltese politics.	1

1971

Malta adopted a new comprehensive contributory insurance scheme, integrating a variety of earlier legislation. The new plan included an annual pension amounting to two-thirds of an individual's salary at the time of retirement.	2

1974, Dec. 13

MALTA BECAME A REPUBLIC within the British Commonwealth. The new constitution provided for a president, a prime minister, and a unicameral legislature.	3

1979

The British military presence ended in Malta.	4

1987

Eddie Fenech Adami led the Nationalist Party to electoral victory and became prime minister, a post he would retain after the 1992 general elections as well.	5

1989

A “neutrality and nonalignment” amendment to the constitution forbade any foreign military base or nuclear-weapons-carrying ship in Maltese territory.	6

Vincent Tabone was elected president.	7
