After granting independence to Guinea-Bissau on Aug. 26, 1974, Portugal recognized in 1975 the independence of Cape Verde Islands (July 5), Mozambique (June 25), São Tomé and Principe (July 12), and Angola (Nov. 11) (See 1974–75).  1

A military coup established a junta under Gen. Antonio de Spinola.  2
 
Sept. 30
 
Gen. Francisco da Costa Gomes replaced Spinola as president, a position he held until July 1976.  3
