A bill was passed in the Spanish Cortes to reduce pension entitlements by 8 percent. It produced an unprecedented rift between the ruling Socialist Party and the General Union of Labor (UGT), the socialist trade union, including a 24-hour national general strike on June 20.  1

Spain joined the European Economic Community, though its formal membership did not begin until Jan. 1, 1986.  2
