Spain became an official member of NATO.  1

Socialists won an overwhelming victory in the elections and formed a new government headed by Felipe González. They won 47 percent of the vote, the greatest electoral victory in Cortes history. They also won the three elections in 1986, 1989, and 1993. González served as premier from December 1982 onward.  2
