The government reported its decision to maintain an independent nuclear deterrent, and announced a record peacetime $5.5 billion defense budget.	1

The government created a new ministry of education and science to replace previous separate ministries.	2

Oct. 15

In general elections the Labour Party won a four-seat majority in the House of Commons. Sir Douglas-Home resigned and (James) Harold Wilson became prime minister and formed a new cabinet.	3

Establishment of a secretary of state for Wales.	4
