Japanese forces invaded the Netherlands Celebes, and presently occupied the entire Indies (See Jan. 11).  1
 
1945, Aug. 17
 
Two days after the Japanese surrender, the Indonesian leaders Achmed Sukarno and Mohammed Hatta proclaimed the INDEPENDENCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA. The Dutch refused to recognize the new government.  2
 
Sept. 29–Oct. 3
 
British and Dutch troops arrived in Batavia to disarm and repatriate the Japanese. Before long, fighting was under way between these troops and the “Indonesian People's Army.”  3
 
Oct. 12
 
The Dutch government offered to negotiate with those Indonesians who were ready to agree to a self-governing Indonesia within the Netherlands kingdom.  4
 
Nov. 13
 
Soetan Sjahrir, a young Socialist, became premier of the new republic while Sukarno became president.  5
