QUOTATION:I came here for one thing only, to try to help national Ireland—and if there is no such thing in existence then the sooner I pay for my illusions the better.
ATTRIBUTION:Roger Casement (1864–1916), Irish colonial administrator, nationalist. Letter, April 29, 1915, written from Germany.

He was trying to form an Irish Brigade of Irish prisoners of war with the aim of freeing Ireland from British rule. Landing in Ireland, April 21, 1916, he was arrested three days later and executed in August of that year. See Casement’s comment under “capital punishment.”
