QUOTATION:People say we want to teach children how to have sex. God taught us how to have sex. All anybody needs to do, is think about their first time. Nobody needs to teach you how to have sex.
ATTRIBUTION:Joycelyn Elders (b. 1933), U.S. pediatrician and medical educator; first woman, and second African American, Surgeon General. As quoted in the New York Times, p. A14 (December 31, 1993).

Elders said this c. 1990, when she was discussing the accusations of those who opposed health and sex education, which she strongly supported. Elders would be fired by President Bill Clinton in 1994, after, in response to a question, she advocated giving children correct information about the effects of masturbation.
