(ts t´ou) (KEY) , city (1994 pop. 30,874), Saxony, E central Germany, on the Lusatian Neisse River, near the Polish and Czech borders. It is a road and rail hub and a center for the environmental-technology industry. Manufactures include textiles, chemicals, machinery, and motor vehicles. An old Slavic settlement, Zittau was chartered in the 13th cent. In 1346 it joined the Lusatian League. It passed to Saxony in the early 17th cent. There are four medieval churches in the city. |
