Whitley Bay
 
 
town (1991 pop. 36,040), North Tyneside metropolitan district, NE England, on the North Sea. Formerly the urban district of Whitley and Monkseaton, Whitley Bay was chartered as a municipal borough in 1954. It is a coastal resort as well as a residential area for the industrial concentration on the northern bank of the Tyne River.
