Werner, Anton Alexander von
 
 
(än´tôn älksän´dr fn vr´nr) (KEY) , 1843–1915, German historical painter, portraitist, and illustrator. He was director (1875–1915) of the Berlin Academy. In the Franco-Prussian War he accompanied the 3d Army Corps in an unofficial capacity as painter. Of this period are his portrait of von Moltke, In Quarters before Paris and Episode of War. His best-known illustrations are those for Scheffel’s poems.
