town (1990 pop. 14,852), Fairfax co., N Va., a residential suburb of Washington, D.C.; inc. 1890. Some research industry is carried on there. Originally called Springfield, Vienna became the site of Fairfax countys first courthouse in 1742. Filene Center for the Performing Arts is on the citys outskirts. Suburban developments in the 1970s and 80s include the enormous Tysons Corner mall, which attracts many shoppers from all over the northern Virginia area.
