(f´rnts tôl´d) (KEY) , 1805–75, father of Hungarian literary history. Toldy edited various literary journals and founded (1842) Nemzeti Könyvtár [national library] to produce the critical edition of Hungary’s classic poets. He also wrote two histories of Hungarian literature (1851, 1864–65), a Hungarian grammar (1866), and a manual of Magyar poetry (1876).
