Tissot, James Joseph Jacques
 
 
(zhmz zhôzf´ zhäk ts´) (KEY) , 1836–1902, French painter and etcher. After participating in the Franco-Prussian War he stayed for 10 years in London, where he was highly esteemed for his genre scenes (e.g., The Ball on Shipboard). In 1882 he went to Palestine and devoted his life to a series of watercolor drawings illustrating the Bible. Many of these are in the Brooklyn Museum.
