(tä´p nh z) (KEY) , Tahapanes (t h p´ n z) (KEY) , or Tehaphnehes (t h f´n h z) (KEY) , ancient city, NE Egypt, on Lake Manzala. The site is now on the Suez Canal. Herodotus states that the city (called by the Greeks Daphnae) had a garrison of Psamtiks troops and, in the early 5th cent. B.C., a Persian garrison. It was superseded as a port by Naucratis. A colony of Jews settled there in the 6th cent. B.C., and the city is mentioned in the Bible. |
