city (1990 pop. 17,567), seat of Iredell co., W central N.C., on a plateau in the Blue Ridge foothills; founded 1789, inc. 1847. It is a commercial and industrial center in an agricultural area that raises tobacco, grain, soybeans, chicken, and cattle. Other products include transportation equipment; machinery; furniture; hot air balloons; flour; feeds; textiles and apparel; lumber; paper; wood, plastic, metal, and glass products; mobile homes; and consumer goods. Nearby is the site of Fort Dobbs (1755).
