| 18911959, English painter. In his landscapes and his often highly erotic portraits and religious-allegorical scenes, Spencers paintings express a highly personal magic realism. His series of war murals in All Souls, Burghclere, Hampshire reflect the impact of his experiences in World War I. Other well-known paintings include the Resurrection (Tate Gall., London); Jubilee Tree (Art Gall. of Toronto); and Christmas Stockings (Mus. of Modern Art, New York City). | 1 | | See biographies by K.
