| (skä´rä´´) (KEY) , city (1990 pop. 10,790), Skaraborg co., S Sweden. Situated in a farming region, it has industries that manufacture metal goods and footwear. Dating from at least the 9th cent., Skara is one of Swedens oldest cities; the countrys first bishopric was established there in the 11th cent. The city has also been an educational center since 1641, when Swedens earliest institutions of higher learning were founded there. Skara has an imposing cathedral (12th cent.; restored 1894). |
