(py r s gy´ dük d v lmôr´) (KEY) , 1588–1672, chancellor of France. Beginning as counselor to the Parlement of Paris, he rose to become chancellor in 1635. He crushed a revolt in Normandy in 1639, presided (1642) over the trial of the marquis de Cinq Mars, and in 1661 arraigned Nicholas Fouquet on charges of embezzlement at the start of a trial that ended in Fouquet’s being condemned (1664) to banishment and eventually, life imprisonment. A friend of Cardinal Mazarin, he was instrumental in having the Parlement accept Anne of Austria as regent for her infant son, Louis XIV. |
