(Joseph Henri Maurice Richard) (zhzf´ äNr´ môrs´ r´shär´´) (KEY) , 1921–2000, Canadian hockey player, b. Montreal. Richard, nicknamed “the Rocket” by his admirers, played his entire career (1942–60) with the Montreal Canadiens, where he became a great hockey star and a French-Canadian icon. He established many National Hockey League records, including becoming the first to score 50 goals in a regular season, which was then 50 games, and eight points in one game. His career total was 544 goals in regular season play.
