(p´kn) (KEY) , range of the Appalachian system, c.2,000 ft (610 m) high, NE Pa. Forested and having many lakes and streams, the Poconos are a major resort area. There are year-round recreational facilities, including well-known ski areas. Housing construction has become abundant, and the presence of residents who commute to work in N.Y. and Philadelphia has greatly increased since the late 1970s.
