Palacio Valdés, Armando

(ärmän´d pälä´thy välds´) (KEY) , 1853–1938, Spanish novelist and critic. He began his career with critical writings, but his reputation rests on his realistic novels, characterized by an optimistic view of life. La aldea perdida [the lost village] (1911) and La hermana San Sulpicio (1889, tr. The Joy of Captain Ribot, 1900) are considered the best of these. A collection of his short stories appeared in English translation in 1935.
