(Paul George Vincent O’Shaughnessy Horgan), 1903–95, American writer, b. Buffalo, N.Y. His diverse works reflect his fascination with the effects of history and landscape on people. Among his books are the novels Main Line West (1936), Things As They Are (1964), Whitewater (1970), and The Thin Mountain Air (1977); his nonfiction includes Great River: The Rio Grande in North American History (1954; Pulitzer), Encounters With Stravinsky (1972), Approaches to Writing (1975), and Lamy of Santa Fe (1975; Pulitzer).
