Gattinara, Mercurino Arborio, marchese di
 
 
(mrcr´n ärbô´r märk´za d gät´´tnä´rä) (KEY) , 1465–1530, Italian statesman and jurist, cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. After a distinguished legal career in his native Piedmont, he served Margaret of Austria as counselor. In 1518 he was made chancellor by the king of Spain, later Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. A humanist and a scholar, Gattinara had much influence upon Charles, whom he urged to create a dynastic empire. Gattinara was made a cardinal in 1529.
