Fulk Nerra

(flk nrä´) (KEY) , 972–1040, count of Anjou (987–1040). Continuously at war with his neighbors (Brittany, Blois, Touraine, Normandy), he vastly increased his lands, notably by seizing Saumur, and became a powerful lord in N France, meeting with scant resistance from the weakened kings. Fulk Nerra built numerous castles on his borders and made several pilgrimages to the Holy Land. He was one of the early members of the Angevin dynasty.
