Her stories and novels paint a picture of Massachusetts and Vermont still under the influence of Puritanism, in her view, a philosophy made rigid by time. Her short story collections include A Humble Romance and Other Stories (1887) and A New England Nun and Other Stories (1891). Her novels, published under her maiden name, Mary E.
