Corbett, James John
 
 
(kôr´bt) (KEY) , 1866–1933, American boxer, b. San Francisco. “Gentleman Jim” Corbett won (1892) the heavyweight boxing championship from John L. Sullivan at New Orleans and lost (1897) the title to Robert L. Fitzsimmons at Carson City, Nev. He failed (1900, 1903) to regain the title in fights with James J. Jeffries. Corbett also appeared on the stage and in films and wrote The Roar of the Crowd (1925).
