(ch´l) (KEY) , city (1990 pop. 135,163), San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1911. A port of entry, the city lies in an area of citrus fruit- and vegetable-growing, and it has grown considerably with the aerospace industry in neighboring San Diego (the population increased 61% between 1980 and 1990). A U.S. Olympic training center is there. Other manufactures include apparel, building materials, and electrical items. Chula Vista has a large percentage of Mexican-American residents.
