(chou´j´) (KEY)  or Chao’an (chou´än´) (KEY) , city (1994 est. pop. 231,800), E Guangdong prov., China, on the Han River. It is a transportation and trade center in a fertile agricultural region, with textile and apparel, machinery, porcelain, and sugar-refining industries. Its names are also spelled Chaochow and Ch’ao-an.
