(shmpn´) (KEY) , city (1990 pop. 63,502), Champaign co., E central Ill.; inc. 1860. It adjoins the city of Urbana and is a commercial and industrial center in a fertile farm area. The Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Parkland College are there. The city’s economic mainstays are agriculture and the university. Founded in 1855 with the arrival of the Illinois Central RR, Champaign was first called West Urbana.
