Carlisle, Frederick Howard, 5th earl of

1748–1825, British statesman. A member of the distinguished Howard family, he went to the American colonies on an unsuccessful peace mission (1778) and served (1780–82) as lord lieutenant of Ireland. In 1798 he was made guardian of Lord Byron, who ridiculed him in the satirical poem English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809).
