Branner, Hans Christian

1903–66, Danish writer. Branner’s early novels, often concerned with the irrational fears of childhood, include The Child Playing on the Shore (1937). With The Riding Master (1949; tr. 1951) he turned to more complex Freudian themes, expressed in an increasingly symbolic vein. Later works include the plays Siblings (1952; tr. The Judge, 1955) and Nobody Knows the Night (1955), and a volume of poems, Ariel (1963).   1
