Bessemer
(bs´mr), city (1990 pop. 33,497), Jefferson co., N central Ala.; inc. 1887. Founded as a mining town in a mineral-rich area, it was named after Sir Henry Bessemer, inventor of the Bessemer process for manufacturing steel, and had significant iron and steel industries. There is metal fabrication and the manufacture of construction and railroad equipment and foundry products.
