at Berlin, Germany; founded in 1948 by students and faculty seceding from Humboldt Univ. in East Berlin. Supported by both the city of Berlin and the German government, it is a large university often in the forefront of academic and social change. It has faculties of medicine, law, economics and business, philosophy and social sciences, classics and archaeology, sciences, language and literature, and political science. There are institutes of North American, Latin American, and East European studies.
