7. Pronunciation Challenges: Confusions and Controversy
|
| § 40. cadre |
This 19th-century borrowing from French has a variety of pronunciations in English including (k d´r ), (kä´dr ), (k d´r ), and (kä´dr ). The first of these was popularized by the United States military, and (kä´dr ) and (kä´dr ) have sprung up probably through the association of cadre with padre. The pronunciation (kä´d r), which is the most common in British English, is closest to the French pronunciation. Any of these pronunciations is acceptable. | 1 |
