7. Pronunciation Challenges: Confusions and Controversy

§ 36. buoy


Traditionally and in Britain this word is pronounced like boy (boi). In the United States the more common pronunciation seems to be (b´), except in the compound life buoy, where (boi) is entrenched. The pronunciation (bwoi), which is also traditional, is now rarely heard in either Britain or the U.S.    1
