§ 17. apartheid


This word from Afrikaans, the language of the Dutch settlers of South Africa, is pronounced in many ways in English including (-pärt´ht´´), (-pärt´ht´´), (-pär´tt´´), (-pär´tt´´), (-pär´td´´), (-pär´td´´). Any of these pronunciations is generally acceptable. The pronunciation that most closely approaches the one in Afrikaans is (-pärt´ht´´).    1
