§ 65. commentate


Commentate, a back-formation from commentator, is normally used to mean “to serve as a commentator”: The retired tennis pro has agreed to commentate on the upcoming match. It is sometimes used transitively to mean “to make a running commentary on,” as in She commentated the tennis match. In an earlier survey, a majority of the Usage Panel found this transitive usage to be unacceptable.    1
