NOUN:1. A division of persons or things by quality, rank, or grade: bracket, class, league, order, rank1, tier. See GROUP, VALUE. 2. One of the units in a course, as on an ascending or descending scale: degree, level, peg, point, rung, stage, step. Informal : notch. See BIG. 3. Deviation from a particular direction: cant1, gradient, heel2, inclination, incline, lean1, list2, rake2, slant, slope, tilt, tip2. See RISE, STRAIGHT. 4. Degree of excellence: caliber, class, quality. See BE, VALUE.
VERB:1. To assign to a class or classes: categorize, class, classify, distribute, group, pigeonhole, place, range, rank1, rate1. See GROUP, VALUE. 2. To evaluate and assign a grade to: mark, score. See VALUE.
