NOUN:1. A young stemlike growth arising from a plant: bine, offshoot, runner, sprig, sprout, tendril. See KIN. 2. A violent, excruciating seizure of pain: cramp1, paroxysm, spasm, throe. See PAIN.
VERB:1. To pass quickly and lightly through the air: dart, float, fly, sail, skim. See MOVE. 2. To move swiftly: bolt, bucket, bustle, dart, dash, festinate, flash, fleet, flit, fly, haste, hasten, hurry, hustle, pelt2, race, rocket, run, rush, sail, scoot, scour2, speed, sprint, tear1, trot, whirl, whisk, whiz, wing, zip, zoom. Informal : hotfoot, rip. Slang : barrel, highball. Chiefly British : nip1. Idioms: get a move on, get cracking, go like lightning, go like the wind, hotfoot it, make haste, make time, make tracks, run like the wind, shake a leg, step (or jump) on it. See MOVE. 3. To discharge a gun or firearm: fire. Idioms: take a shot at. See ACTION. 4. To launch with great force: fire, hurtle, loose, project, propel. Idioms: let fly. See MOVE. 5. To wound or kill with a firearm: gun (down), pick off. Slang : plug. See HELP. 6. To send through the air with a motion of the hand or arm: cast, dart, dash, fling, heave, hurl, hurtle, launch, pitch, shy2, sling, throw, toss. Informal : fire. See MOVE.
PHRASAL VERB:shoot down Informal. To cause to be no longer believed or valued: debunk, deflate, discredit, explode, puncture. Idioms: knock the bottom out of, shoot full of holes. See VALUE. shoot up Informal. To rise abruptly and precipitously: rocket, sky, skyrocket, soar. See INCREASE.
