NOUN: A horizontal, usually underground stem that often sends out roots and shoots from its nodes. Also called rootstalk, rootstock.
ETYMOLOGY:Greek rhizma, mass of roots, from rhizoun, to cause to take root, from rhiza, root. See wrd- in Appendix I.
